Education

Hawaii’s overall spending per pupil is among the highest in the nation, yet our keiki’s test scores rank in the bottom tier of all states. We need a reformed education system that puts our keiki first. We need to empower and reward teachers, create a supportive and safe environment conducive to learning, and reduce overhead and bureaucracy to ensure that money is spent directly at the classroom level. I believe that we should place governance, oversight and support at the local level to reflect unique community strengths and needs as opposed to an inflexible statewide model. We need to incorporate the family and community as a central part of education which allows parents the freedom and flexibility to decide how best to educate their children, and prepare our children for rapidly changing economies based on knowledge and innovation.
